Goody Two Shoes v. Frischborn
Cassie was born at the Frischborn Kennel in Turtleford Saskatchewan, Canada, and the first time we saw her it was instant love. She was the Queen Bee even then and I can remember Marg Uhlig saying "shes going to be a handful that one". Well, she has never disappointed us and yes, Marg was right!! Willful from the onset and single-minded - that was our Cassie. It was over 100 degrees when we picked her up in Calgary and headed back across the Rockies. She had a block of ice in her crate and just straddled it to keep cool. Every stop we made by a lake she made for the water - at 7 weeks she had no fear - even if it meant sliding down an embankment to reach her goal.
Her first introduction to the new neighbourhood was an encounter with a huge Great Dane and she promptly attached herself to his jowl and became airborne very quickly, this was great fun for her but not so for the Great Dane. She was about the size of one of his paws.
She was an amazing girl - loved to ride on front end loaders and other big machinery, rode on the lawn-mower and insisted that she was the Captain our boat and had to sit on the bridge in the drivers seat. Many a passerby had to do a double take to see if they saw it right. When in the car she had to ride shotgun - and it did not matter who was sitting in the front seat you just had to move on over!! She always had to be with you - she just did not want to miss anything and at a very early age learned how to open most of the doors in the house and let herself in. Also, no suitcase or bag was safe if she could reach it - I have never known a dog to open zippers but Cassie had mastered it, especially if there was food hidden inside.
Many people will remember one of our first Entlefests in Utah when we participated in a Swiss Day Parade in Midway, Utah. Cassie walked at the front with her little cart leading the way it was great and she was so very proud. But again it was a very hot day and as soon as we got back to the park and she was undone from her cart she literally dove into a slough ditch and came up looking like the monster from the black lagoon. What a mess - and we got her cleaned up and bingo she dove right back in and just laid there with her head under the water and blowing bubbles. It was hilarious. Cassie must have thought herself as a little person because she would much rather sit with the people and watch the other dogs do their stuff - preferably in her own chair.
Cassie was one of the first Entles to pull her cart in the Maifest Parade and for several years led the Swiss dogs in the big parade down the main street.
She had her problems as the years went on. She had a bad hip and a wonky elbow but it never slowed her down for a moment. I have never seen an Entle sit like she did with her two back legs straight out in front and off the ground. One of her favorite positions was sitting on the corner of the sofa, lying back in the corner and had the remote control on her chest, looked like she was a little person about to change the channels. There were a number of remotes that went missing and to this day have still not shown up, not to mention the handset for the phone!
Cassie was hard on the mouse and rat population and often worked in tandem with our cat, Roxy..the cat would bring them in house and Cassie would catch them. It was a great game - (to them). All you had to say was "is there a mouse in the house" and Cass would go on a hunt. In her last week she and my yellow lab bagged an opossum.
Even when Cassie was diagnosed with Lymphoma and Leukemia the veterinarian said she looks too good and she did, she never thought she was sick! They only gave me a week and we had 2 great months. She still was the Queen Bee right to the end and always the lady! It was just before Christmas and Cassie made sure she got all her presents, I had to go out and during that time she managed to pull the tablecloth over and all the doggie treats hit the floor - also some shortbread - she had a feast - and all she did when I got home was look content and gave a big burp (not very lady-like). Cassie was my first Entle and the love of my life. Everyone who knew her will agree - she was unique. I miss her terribly and she will always be my special little girl and best friend. I was lucky to have her in my life. Hunter, Chips, Roxy and Jazzy miss her too.
